Portoferraio

This evening we went to a fashionable bar in a seaside village and watched the World Cup on a huge screen. The bar had one of the most extraordinary and showy lavatories I have ever had the pleasure to visit...a ceiling of tiny lights like stars, mosaic walls and ornate mirrors, like a theatre set...
Meanwhile outside the sun was starting to set. We ordered some tapas, watched the end of the game and then headed off to a local chapel where, it turned out, a choir from Vermont of all places, was about to give a free concert of polyphonic choral music - a genre beloved of the Corsicans. It was marvellous.

But I digress. I think this island is called Portoferraio. A few miles off the coast of Corsica. I spent a while gazing at it and daydreaming about a Robinson Crusoe life on its beaches.
