The caged bird

In Belgium we live in a rented house and of course that means some of the furnishings come with the house. As does this tile plateau in the downstairs bathroom. I don't find it particularly interesting, it doesn't coincide with the rest of bathroom design and it seemed a strange place to hang it/glue it to the wall. I was utterly surprised to find out that its design comes from Makkum earthenware (Dutch traditional earthenware) and that these tiles can be quite costly if they're old (learned that from the Dutch version of the Antiques Road Show).
The caged bird apparently refers to conjugal fidelity, and these tile plateaus used to be a wedding present traditionally. Makes you think though, why would a caged bird symbolise this? And also makes me wonder if this tile plateau was a wedding gift for the people the house was built for :-)

Not a desperation Blip in case you're wondering, I've been looking for 'diagonals' all day, that's for this week's alphabet photo challenge, and I was wondering if the regular tiles' design in the bathroom would make a good picture, hence this image.
Which will not do for diagonals, but does work as a Blip :-)
