Henri Matisse

Caught an early train to London to see the Matisse exhibition of cut outs at Tate Modern. There is some marvellous work on show, not least the designs he made for the chapel near his studio in Vence. Touching to see some documentary footage of an elderly and infirm Matisse clipping skilfully and purposefully away with his scissors - "cutting into colour" as he put it - in order to bring one of his conceptions into being.

This is The Snail, one of the last and most abstract of his works.
