Today's the day .............................. to stop on the way

We've passed the sign to this house many times on our journey from the Lake District down to Wales - but today we decided to actually go and visit.

And it was quite a surprise too. It's a fascinating yet unpretentious early 18th-century country house owned by the Yorke family for over 250 years. Its most unique feature is probably the large collection of servants' portraits complete with descriptive poems about each individual. The servants really became part of the extended family of the household - which must have been quite an unusual occurrence in those times.

The gardens were lovely too, not that we had long enough to do them justice. We'll have to go back another time ............................
