Don't mess with me!

I'm off to London today, so I was pleased when checking the moth trap this morning (poor catch, but still a couple of new ones) to see this large hoverfly feeding on Hemp Agrimony. It is Volucella zonaria, the largest British hoverfly, thought to be a Hornet mimic. It only arrived on the south coast of England at the end of the 1930s and is still steadily spreading northwards. I'm sure it will have done well this summer.
