Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Pontiac mills

A  couple of days ago I blipped the derelict industrial buildings adjacent to our excellent, very modern and quirky hotel. Now, thanks to Mr Google, I know a bit more about the buildings.

Pontic Mills is a historic textile mill complex that produced the original Fruit of the Loom brand of cloth. The mills were built in 1863 and produced uniforms for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. President Abe Lincoln dedicated the Mill Tower in 1863. In 1920 Webster Knight sold Fruit of the Loom and the Pontiac Mills and the textile industry in New England began declining shortly after this period. A pity to see the mills lying derelict, sadly reminiscent of my birthplace, the West Riding of Yorkshire.
