Clayton's Lilies

Dear Diary,

Clayton was a collector, of just about everything, but his prize collection was his day lilies. He had dozens and dozens of varieties and to walk around his garden in midsummer is such a delight. Clayton passed away a couple of years ago and his wife is too elderly to tend the beds but his daughter lives at the old farmhouse now and she has inherited the lily beds.

She has allowed me to transplant some to my garden. That is one of the wonderful things about day lilies. Every few years you can divide and share. Many people in town have some of Clayton's lilies, his legacy of generosity and kindness. I have continued the tradition of sharing the lilies. It is a kind of country immortality I guess.

Planting a garden is believing in the future...
