Caerlaverock Castle

Today was our last morning in the Lake District after spending a lovely day yesterday at the wedding. The weather hasn't been great, a bit wet so after another filling breakfast we headed off up the road.

Shortly after getting back into Scotland the sun broke through and we decided to take a wee detour via Caerlaverock Castle. The heavens opened again shortly before we found it but had stopped by the time we arrived. It is a smallish castle in terms of what there is to explore inside but there is also a boardwalk that takes you along to the site of the original castle as well as a small visitor centre and a children's play area. If the weather had been better and we had Eden with us it could have been a nice place to visit for a few hours.

Back on the road and we hadn't gone far when we drove past a car that had clearly not long come off the road into a ditch. We turned around as no-one else appeared to stop, just driving past and went to see if the young man was ok. He had looked ok getting out the car and as we pulled alongside him he was trying with no avail to reverse the car out again. He had his young son with him too and thankfully they both were uninjured and had just missed hitting a tree. I spoke to the wee boy while Mrforeveryoung tried to help get the car out again and the boy was like "we're in the trees" quite unphased by what had happened.
Unfortunately we didn't have much luck helping getting the car out as the front wheels just kept spinning and I was surprised by how few people stopped to offer further assistance. The young man lived locally and called for some help and insisted he would be ok and we went on our way.

We went along some more country roads the sat nav clearly taking us the scenic view back to the motorway. Once back on the motorway we passed another car that had obviously spun out of control with debris across the motorway. They had clearly had a lucky escape and had assistance with them but it was a clear reminder of how bad the roads can be in wet weather!

I dozed the rest of the way home and we have a quiet couple of hours to ourselves before Eden and Ethan arrive too!
