Waimak in Summer

My first blip shows the Waimakariri River in flood. It was taken from the Waimakariri Gorge bridge eight months ago. Now in summer the river is relatively quiet and clear, reflecting the blue sky. This was a Monday morning. I would expect to see jetboats and kayaks on it at the weekend, and vehicles and trailers on the beach this side of the river..

The footpath on the left leads to a locked gate at the top of steps going down to the platform, which has been there for many years. The shingle spit is new and looks as though it has been formed when the hole was dug in the riverbed. I don't know the purpose, but there are plans afoot to cut a canal from the Gorge to take significant quantities of water for irrigation. I'm hoping the work has nothing to do with that. Perhaps a passenger jetboat operates from there. I avoid the place when it's busy.

Please note the blue sky. It is the second time this year we have had a sky like that.
