Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

The good old days!

We now find ourselves in Salem, the scene of the infamous witch trials of 1692. The memorial to the 20 unfortunates who were executed is next to the old burying ground. The memorial is in the form of a wall constructed of large, rough hewn granite blocks with 20 protruding slabs each inscribed with the name of one of the victims and the date and manner of their execution. All were hanged except for Giles Corey who refused to plead at his trial and was therefore pressed under heavier and heavier rocks in an attempt to make him plea; he died in the process.

The town seems makes a good income from this sordid affair with an offering of rather tacky witch and magic related museums .
