Ammonites

Ammonite Press, the publishing company I work for, is housed in the adjoining building to which this detail belongs. My parent company's head office, in Lewes High Street, dominated by the castle, is the former home of Dr. Gideon Mantell, surgeon, palaeontologist and geologist, who was born in Lewes in 1790.

Mantell discovered, amongst other fascinating treasures, the first fossil teeth, and later the fossil bones of the prehistoric Iguanodon in the Sussex Weald.

Ammonites and other fossil motifs feature in the portico of the building, as well as these lofty columns.
