Waiting for the show

I think there is no moment in theatre to match those just before the curtain goes up - or, in this case, the performers appear on stage. Catriona and Anna are entranced here, and yet all they can see is a set representing the Pirate Granny's living room, in a tented theatre in the middle of Edinburgh.

The show itself was energetic and lively and reminded me of the TV shows for the same age group that seemed to be the backdrop to my grandchildren's lives to date. What actually concerned me more was the fact that at the same time as the "pirates" were swaying about on stage during a "thunderstorm", the lighting gantries above our heads were swaying about in the huge gusts of wind that suddenly swept the world outside. Apparently I was alone among our party in calculating that the safest place to shove the nearest child in the event of a collapse would be under the seats.

Who needs theatre with an over-active imagination?
