The Last Lily

Dear Diary,

More signs of the seasonal changes that will soon be upon us. These lemon lilies by the barn are the last to bloom. I always look forward to their cheery little faces upturned to the sun.

This is the last of them. The late day light caught the solitary lily perfectly, its 15 minutes in the spotlight. I like the shadow of it on the barn ramp amidst its fallen comrades.

Cooler mornings are also a signal that triggers a flurry of activity for the chipmunks and other little creatures to fill the larder for the coming winter. Birds are preparing for the migration to warmer climates and everywhere there is a subtle quieting. It is as if Summer is taking one last deep breath.

To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.
