Castle of Doorwerth

Castle Doorwerth is a water castle in the floodplains of the river Rhine near the village Doorwerth, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The castle is first mentioned in 1260, when the Lord of Vianen was besieged and burned. We passed by today on our way to Nijmegen (where I had bought a closet for my bathroom). So we went to the castle for a nice, hot dutch soup called "snert". We also passed another castle, but this one is totaly rebuild and made even bigger than the original. The castle is called "de Haar". The medieval house was build during the fourteenth century, founded on a higher ground along a dead arm of the river Rhine. The castle was destroyed during the quarrels between the bishop and the city of Utrecht in 1482. In 1892 they started to rebuild her. And the result is a fairytale.
