Creels

Creels are what we call lobster pots. They are used by local fishermen for catching crabs and lobsters.

There are a few slightly different designs and a variety of materials is used.

These have a metal frame which helps them to sink.
A few are made from wood but a modern innovation is to use coloured plastic piping. The wood and plastic ones have to carry additional ballast in order to hold them on the sea bottom.

The netting is made from whatever comes to hand and in whatever colour. I thought this red propylene one helped it stand out from the crowd.
