Busy sky

Our annual trek round an extensive set of fenland ditches today, all set in intensive arable, which fortunately had been harvested. We usually go in September, but the Internal Drainage board drops the levels in early autumn, to provide more storage, and on several years we've found most of our ditches dry. Plenty of water today, and a good set of aquatic plants, considering the apparently barren setting.

We started out in glorious sunshine, but the clouds soon built up and by lunchtime there were some seriously heavy showers about. We only got caught in one bad one - luckily we had decided to pack our waterproof coats at the last minute. The good thing about flat fenland scenery is the huge skyscapes, and today's was pretty awe-inspiring.
