Fontaine de Vaucluse

Monday
Today, we were joined by Magali again, and she took us to visit several beautiful nearby villages. We started in Fontaine de Vaucluse, best known for being the location of the source of the River Sorgue. It's in a striking location, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. We first of all walked up the valley along the river to its source, then had a look at the paper mill beside the river, where they demonstrate paper-making techniques from the Middle Ages. We then went on to L'Isle sur la Sorgue, quite different in character, but still very attractive. The waters of the Sorgue have provided a steady supply of water for local crafts and industry since ancient times, and several of the old water wheels still remain. It is also a popular centre for antique hunters. Magali said she remembers many boring trips when she was young, when her parents were looking for particular things for their house! We had lunch here in a little place across from the church. Next, we visited the beautiful hill-top village of Lourmarin, which has a chateau. The town attracted numerous artists over the years. It's most famous inhabitant was the author Albert Camus, who is buried in the cemetery. In the early evening we met up with Magali's parents at La Roque d'Anthéron, to attend an open air piano concert in the grounds of the chateau. Finally, we returned to their home and enjoyed dinner on the terrace, enjoying the beautiful sunset - a wonderful way to end our visit.
