Split

A very early visit to Diocletian's Palace and we climbed the bell tower before it got crowded. The Palace was built in 350 AD for the Emperor Diocletian to retire to (a very egotistical and cruel ruler apparently). It operates as a 'living museum' so Roman soldiers and toga-clad noblemen and their ladies stroll the streets.

Right outside the Old Town is a lively colourful market where the local people sell their home-grown and home-made produce. We bought some local specialities to take to the beach, one of which was a slice of flat, round, very thin flat bread fried and filled with spinach, drizzled with olive oil and crushed raw garlic! Very tasty but I don't think anyone will speak to us for the rest of the day. We bought it from the stall of a little old lady who spoke no English so I don't know what it was called but a Croatian customer described it as best he could and highly recommended it.

The one thing that alarms me both in Italy and here in Croatia is that nothing seems to be done about the awful graffiti that defaces so many of their beautiful old buildings.
