Azzam

This is Azzam, the world's largest superyacht at 180m long. Everything about this yacht is big, including the price tag. It is reputed to have cost £400m but the builders have never confirmed this. It was delivered many months ago into the ownership of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates. But it continues to sit on the dock in Bremen where it was built. The Sheikh hasn't used it yet. His health hasn't been good. So here it sits, all crewed and ready, awaiting sailing orders.

I had a much better angle on it from the yard, with the sun behind, but the builders wouldn't let me take a picture of it from there - verboten - even though it's publicly visible from this side of the river. Inside the shed is another goliath of a yacht that will be finished in 2016. But you're not supposed to know that. It's a secret. So don't tell anyone.

I was up at 3.30 am, got home around midnight, a good visit but frustrating from the photography point of view after I'd carted over my heavy camera bag. But then, I'm employed for the words. I don't blame the yard, they're tied to non-disclosure agreements and everyone there has to sign them. They get one or two orders a year each worth hundreds of millions of Euros and they can't risk jeopardising a single potential sale that will keep thousands of people in work.
