The Dinkum, Polegate

A new sign has appeared on the wall of the Dinkum pub at Polegate.
The links with Australia and the first world war was explained in an earlier entry ,and now the connection is given pictorial impact.
On the 25th of April 1915 Australian troops were landed at Anzac Cove in an attempt to gain Constantinople, in what was to be known as the Gallipoli campaign.
Gaining a tenuous foothold on the beach ,concerted but unsuccessful attempts to break through the Turkish/Russian defenses in August resulted in stalemate.
The Australian troops were evacuated on the 19th/20 of December 1915, but had suffered a total of 26,111 casualties and 8,141 deaths.
Despite these loses it as been said that the Gallipoli campaign had no influence on the course of the war.
