Ruthven Barracks

Stopped on the road home to get a shot of Ruthven Barracks. This is the smallest and best preserved of four barracks built in 1719-1721 after the failed Jacobite uprising of 1715.

It came under attack in 1745 and again in 1746 during the final Jacobite uprising, when the garrison surrendered to Gordon of Glenbuchat’s men.

It featured one final time in 1746. Following their defeat at Culloden the Jacobite army regrouped at Ruthven to await word from their leader, Prince Charles Edward Stuart – Bonnie Prince Charlie.

On 20 April 1746 his message arrived….

‘Let every man seek his own safety in the best way he can.’
