Stuck for somewhere to take my eight year old today, during her mid-term break, I decided on a trip to Belfast Castle. Castles feature highly on Sophie's list of favourite places due to the Disney Princess phenomenon so it was an easy sell.
Belfast Castle was completed in 1870 and far exceeded the original budget of £11000! This was the home of the 3rd Marquis of Donegall with his second wife. The building was handed over to Belfast Corporation in 1934 and was opened to the public in 1937. It was used by the Royal Navy Admiralty during WWII.
Its position on the slopes of Belfast's Cave Hill allow commanding views of Belfast Lough on a clear day, when Bangor and Holywood can be seen.
