Winnats Pass, Derbyshire.

Today we ventured up to Castleton for a bite to eat in The Castle Inn where we saw the bizarre sight of an elderly man dressed with long mac and wellington boots. Nothing strange about that, but he had little bells on each wellington, a couple of the bottom of his coat and one on the end of his walking stick. Answers on a postcard please on that one as it left me scratching my head.

Winnats Pass is located in Castleton and is without question my favourite view in the world. It is awe inspiring to drive through the pass and if you ever visit Derbyshire you must drive or walk down the pass and savour its beauty. For those who do not know the pass, I captured it with a car in shot so you can get some idea of scale. If they charged £5.00 to drive from the top to the bottom of the pass then it would be money well spent.

The pass was originally thought to be the result of the collapse of a giant cavern though it is now believed to be a ravine between the coral reefs that originally formed the limestone.

The pass is haunted by two lovers, Henry and Clara, who eloped from Castleton to marry. They did not get far as they were murdered by lead miners and their bodies dumped. When the wind blows a certain way, it is said you can hear the voices and screams of Henry and Clara on the wind, pleading for their lives to be spared.

My blip cannot do justice to the beauty of the pass. Breathtaking is overused, but in this case it is thoroughly justified.
