Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

The morning after.

Well it is all over, we are to remain united. An occasion, perhaps, to showcase more words from the Doric, the dialect spoken in the North-East of Scotland which is rich in words and phrases associated with the land and the sea.

STAMYGASTER: A surprise, shock or disappointment.

This morning everyone in Scotland awoke to a stamygaster, whether it be the disappointment of the YES voters, or the pleasant surprise of the NO voters.

GLAIKIT GILLIEPEROUS: A stupid, irresponsible, rough and ready fool.

This was the scene on the Ythan this morning. Someone had removed one of the large No Thanks notices from a field, carefully folded it up and then casually tossed it over the fence into the river Ythan. Whether it was the work of an angry and frustrated Yes voter or a No voter removing the notice from his field I know not. What I do know is that such thoughtless littering was the act of a glaikit gillieperous.
