3rd Instar

Shield Bug Nymph

This is the 3rd instar nymph of the hawthorn shield bug (Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale).
It comes in both a green form and the less common red form seen here.

It must have dropped off its host tree for I found this one on a hazel leaf in the hedgerow.
