Wellow's historic church

One of the most historic and picturesque places in the Romsey area is the parish church of St Margaret’s at Wellow.
The church dates back to 1215 and plans are already being made to celebrate the 800th anniversary next year.
Its flint faced stone construction is rich in architectural interest, not least of which are interior wall paintings which are said to be original and from that period.
The weather worn timber porch on the south side is reckoned to be 16th century.
Yet although the church is located some distance from the main centre of the village of Wellow, it draws many visitors because of its association with Florence Nightingale whose family home was at nearby Embley Park, and the churchyard was her burial place. Storms earlier this year damaged the monument to her, but it has been restored and stands a few yards from the historic church door.
