A concrete love affair

Moeraki Boulders

Had a long drive from Dunedin to Lake Tekapo, but plenty of stops made the journey an enjoyable one.
These are the Moeraki Boulders and are spherical novelties left in place by the eroding coastline.

After our journey took in these boulders, we stopped in the picturesque town of Oamaru, visiting the towns heritage area and a the studios of a community radio station, Heritage Radio, with a superb collection of old wireless sets.

But we were very much set on reaching Lake Tekapo because of our booking for the Mount John Observatory's evening of stargazing. Once up to 1300 metres above sea level and with beautifully clear skies we gazed at the spectacular southern sky for two glorious hours. An experience i would whole heartedly recommend, the sight of milky way across the sky was unforgettable. We even got to look through the big telescope at Saturn, her rings resolving through the mild atmospheric distortion. An unforgettable evening and just so amazing to see the southern sky with my own eyes.
