Desert Pastime
We wakened at 6am just as the sky lightened. Sleeping bags were stuffed into sacs, mattresses rolled up, rucksacks packed, and a breakfast of omelettes, rolls and tea eaten which was prepared by the Siwan drivers. They are amazing guys, talented in rustling up delicious meals at the drop of a hat, on open fires.
There was a short game of kick about with a ball which suddenly appeared from one of the cars before we left
A morning of sand cruising ensued - up dunes, down dunes, the cars seemingly vertical and getting regularly stuck, which entailed all hands on deck to get them going again.
A lunar like landscape for our lunch stop:flat topped cliffs and stony mounds with girls behind one mound and boys behind another one for the calls of nature.
The afternoon drive took us to a small oasis manned by the army and we had to have permission to stop and wash our hands and faces in the piped spring water.
Then onwards for the night's camping amongst great limestone cliffs at the outer edge of the White Desert which we enter tomorrow.
His Lordship and I had a minor disagreement as to where to put our sleeping bags, but it was resolved without bodily injury because he made the most noise and I capitulated.
