A Bit Of Fresh Eyre

Road to Sibiu

Day 2 of Roadtrip: ...? to Sibiu, Romania

The second 'leg' of this trip came in at just 1100km. But by god did it feel so much longer, and undoubtedly take much longer, too. Once off of the excellent German Autobahns it all started falling apart.

Soon after crossing over the border into Austria, I took over the 850 to allow Adrian some sleep. Unfortunately as we headed towards and further into Austria a huge lightning storm became present on the horizon. Yeah we're going to have to go through this.
So sometime around 3am, an unbelievable amount of rain hit and being the one driving someone else's newly refurbished 5.4l V12 BMW with semi-slick rear tyres I was somewhat nervous. Aquaplaning in it is not something I want to repeat.

I guess I gave up the ghost sometime before 5am, and Beni and Liga took over everything. The rest of us got some much needed rest. I was pretty tired hence I have no real idea what sort of time this was. Nevertheless the broken sleep in the back seat was much needed, and by the time I woke up, we had cleared Austria and were just about at the Hungarian border. We had set our sights for breakfast in Hungary so we'd managed that at least. It wasn't a nice breakfast.

Arron continued the drive through Hungary while Beni caught up on his night shift. No issues save for the single arbitrary check-engine light I was awoken from my napping for. Just some random thing related to the lambda sensor. Clear it, ignore it and it didn't come back.

Once we reach Romania however things change massively. It has been getting hotter all the way through Hungary (seriously no aircon again?!?) and Romanian roads just give a whole new meaning to 'bothered'. They're atrocious. Overtaking is required a lot, too. Maybe sports suspension wasn't such a brilliant idea.

As a stark contrast however the motorways are brand new, empty, and lovely and flat and smooth. Despite there being just 350km of Romania to get through to arrive in Sibiu; it took a ridiculous 6 hours or so. But getting there the hotel is actually excellent; and amazingly we are the first to arrive.

2300km in around 30 hours isn't too bad though. I definitely don't want to do it again - but its one hell of a roadtrip story, right?
