I've had my students calculating energy values today in their nutrition class.

The true energy value of a food is the calorific value, not the number of grams.

But food manufacturers prefer to use grams because it tells a more palatable story about unhealthy foods.

So the students were shown a food label and were asked to identify the food from its nutritional information.

This is one of the labels.

As you can see it has no carbohydrate, protein, fat or fibre.

The students were very quick to get this one right.
