Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Chelsea Morning

Wakening this morning from a deep sleep, I thought I heard Mr. Fun tip-toe into the bedroom to get the camera from the night-stand. A few moments later I heard him open the door to the upstairs deck and then a few moments beyond that and he was back in the guest bedroom (where we've been sleeping lately) showing me what he had just captured with the cheapie point & shoot.

It looked bright and beautiful and stunning on the viewfinder. That moment helped me to wake more fully. Then he went downstairs to prepare the coffee press and soon I was sipping a cup of my favorite chocolate flavored coffee.

I've been productive today, and I mentioned a few days ago that I was keeping a head cold at arm's length. Well, I still am. That head cold seems to stay right out on the front porch of my life, so today I just felt a little sleepy all day. Maybe it is just the tail end of winter. It's been a lovely chilly gray day. The kind of day when I'd just like to wear jammies and stay in bed all day reading and writing and napping. I should have just given-in and gone with that luxury.

Going back to our Chelsea morning . . . Joni Mitchell wrote that song while living in her New York City, Chelsea neighborhood room, with light filtered through shards of the colored glass of a mobile she and friends had made. She says, "The sun would hit the mobile and send these moving colors all around the room. As a young girl, I found that to be a thing of beauty." Mitchell does not think of the song as part of her best work. I find that more than a little interesting because I think it is a wonderful song.

And it was more than wonderful to be woke by my man delighting me with a the view of a Chelsea morning on the screen of my camera. Before my entrance into the world of Blipfoto this would have never happened!

Good night from Southern California.

""Chelsea Morning"" by Joni Mitchell

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I heard
Was a song outside my window, and the traffic wrote the words
It came a-reeling up like Christmas bells, and rapping up like pipes and drums

Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
And we'll wear it 'till the night comes

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I saw
Was the sun through yellow curtains, and a rainbow on the wall
Blue, red, green and gold to welcome you, crimson crystal beads to beckon

Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
There's a sun show every second

Now the curtain opens on a portrait of today
And the streets are paved with passersby
And pigeons fly
And papers lie
Waiting to blow away

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses

Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
And we'll talk in present tenses

When the curtain closes and the rainbow runs away
I will bring you incense owls by night
By candlelight
By jewel-light
If only you will stay
Pretty baby, won't you
Wake up, it's a Chelsea morning
