Some nice knockers in #Mdina

A visit to Malta’s medieval capital Mdina - also known as “the silent city”.

After the Great Siege, the Knights of St. John decided to move the capital to their new fortress city Valleta, which rendered Mdina a veritable ghost town. In modern times, almost no cars are allowed within the city proper and even the horses have rubber covers to their shoes, so the city is one of the quietest on the island.

Mdina is also famous for elaborate pairs of door knockers which decorate virtually all the buildings. Some date back six-hundred years.

Many of the door knockers reflect a sea-faring nation. Stylized fish, dolphins and seahorses but also lions, dogs, birds, faces and coats of arms.
