The Great Escape

A gall wasp (Andricus kollari) has tunnelled out through the visible hole in one of these galls. The galls are oak marble galls (often erroneously called oak apples). There were dozens of them on a small oak barely four feet high.

Apparently, they need a turkey oak to complete their life cycle.
