La Vallette Bathing Pools...

... where I spent every possible moment of my teenage years until I left school. Apart from swimming and diving we used to play cards for hours on end; mainly Euchre. Euchre is not really known in the UK other than in Cornwall but is also played in the USA; though I believe they don't use the joker. It is a fast game of taking tricks but is only played with 9 upwards plus the joker. Normally a game for 4 players but 3 or 6 can play. Thereares still Euchre Leagues over here, with games played in local pubs in one league and in a hall in the more serious league.
One thing that was not allowed at the pool was to play cards for money; now maybe we were anticipating that one day Guernsey and Alderney would become centres for online gambling sites but we did like to put the odd (old) penny on the outcome of the game or even more daring play pontoon, again for pennies. So we used to swim off to Castle Cornet which you can see here; the girls got the raw end of the deal because we had to wear swimming caps to transport the cards across.
