The milkweed pods have split, and their soft, feathery seeds are everywhere. Originally it was the orderliness of the shingled seeds within the pod that caught my attention (seen here) but I decided to go with the more tactile, but also more chaotic image of the seeds in the process of release.

Milkweed, of course, is the host plant of the monarch butterfly. And although there is enough round here to feed an army of monarchs, it is thought that depletion of the plant along the monarch migration route is partly responsible for the precipitous decline in the monarch population in recent years.
