Look Out

Endings and beginnings

Few things quite as depressing as a derelict pub - of which there are too many these days.
This is the (former) Church Arms on Ford Street, off Chapel Street. It looks sad and forlorn, and forgotten. The satellite dish is a clue that it survived into the era of Sky TV. The little Greenalls brewery sign suggests the beer wasn't that great (personal prejudice) - and of course the brewery itself is a thing of the past, now a mix of offices and a big Morrisons supermarket in Stockton Heath, Warrington.
I quite like the buddleia established in the nooks and crevices and set to go further given half a chance. For it, this is just another wall or escarpment providing good habitat.
Around the old pub though things are changing. On one side the old Salford Town Hall (most recently a magistrates court)is being converted to apartments by X1 developments. And on the other, the area around the RC Cathedral is gradually being transformed into a substantial diocesan centre - the top of the cathedral spire is just visible here. The pub will go as part of all that, providing an access into the diocesan area.
