Sunset at the Inn

This was a rather busy day. We made an early start, but still managed enough of the buffet breakfast to keep us going all day.... ("managed" = "eat and conceal".)

First, we travelled on single-track lines over snowy, but sunny, wastes, to Marktredwitz, and then to Cheb, a few km into the Czech Republic. So very interestingly different from Germany, so still showing evidence of its years as part of the "East": much more so than the way Prague now is.

Retracing our tracks, we went via Nürnberg to München. There we checked into our hotel, but missed our intended train to Mittenwald by 35 seconds ("In Germany, all trains on time are leaving"). Instead, we went to Kufstein in Austria, where this picture was taken on the River Inn (the Inn where the other bridge becomes Innsbruck). Another excellent scenic train journey (and a new one for us after Rosenheim), with snow and mountains as the backdrop. Back in München, we ended up in the Augustiner Brauerei, and joined in for further Lenten self-denial by drinking the 7.8% Augustiner Maximator, just released that week. VERY warming and relaxing after 1000 km plus on the tracks (28 Euros for up to 5 people).

And so to bed (02:00) for an 06:45 alarm in preparation for the Sunday flight home. We managed to avoid the serious storms around us, and were back home in time for a late lunch.
