Mill pond

The calm mill pond gives little indication of how busy Preston Mill had been for over 400 years. Water flows from the nearby River Tyne and into the pond then along the mill lade to power the water wheel which is just visible behind the gate. The most noteworthy part of the mill is the conical roofed kiln with a way leading from the mill. Just behind can be seen part of the roof of the miller’s house which, like others, was normally built separately from the mill incase of fire which was not an unusual event in mills. It is now used as a visitor reception centre at this National Trust for Scotland property.
