News from Nowhere, another genuine Liverpool institution. Run as a women's co-operative it celebrated its 40th birthday this year. It has not only survived against the odds and the Amazons and Waterstones, but it has thrived and done so as a radical bookshop. Radical not just in the contents of its shelves, but also in the support that it provides for radical causes. Its survival has required dedication and hard work and its contribution to the city and beyond was recognised in its thirtieth year with the award of an honorary degree by Liverpool John Moores University and a Mayoral Reception.
