The stones

Slowly counting down to the end of the dig.

As usual there is so much still to do. The site wont be finished. There is only so much money available, but we have found lots of interesting features and nice artefacts.

This is one of them. A small setting of stones five stones, set firmly against one another around the edges of a shallow pit. When initially discovered, these were half covered by a stone 'lid'. We thought they may have been a pot setting (area to place a rough shaped large ceramic pot) as the feature sat next to the central hearth. However, when I finally excavated it, the stone setting wa splaced atop a flat stone base, and the edges sealed with clay. What was this used for? Would it hold water? Ashes?

Ideas on a postcard.
