Misfit

“A vibrant green moving sculpture will grace the front of Marlborough's new multimillion-dollar ASB Theatre.
Eminent New Zealand sculptor Grant Williams has crafted the piece which will be installed early next week.
Featuring a series of leaf pods that represent both leaves and seeds, Williams says the inspiration came from Marlborough's spring and new growth.
The unnamed work is a kinetic wind sculpture made from fiberglass over stainless steel and stands at an impressive 10 metres high and nearly 10 metres wide.
"To fit the site it needed to be tall and to scale," Williams said.”….. So read the article in the Marlborough Express, our local newspaper.
The new ASB Theatre is under construction. It will be great to have Grant William’s very colourful sculpture gracing the river bank. Knowing the nay-sayers in our district it is bound to be controversial. But being one who loves sculpture and artworks in the great outdoors I will love it. The colour is amazing and I told Grant this morning that it looks like green apples. At least it did look like slices of green apples as it sat securely tied on the back of the truck on the riverbank. So near the end of its long journey from Auckland.
The team who were supervising its installation had run into trouble early in the game. They had to drive along part of the riverbank to get the sculpture to the planned location. They then had to drive under the Hutcheson Street Bridge to make the final few yards. There was a serious discrepancy in heights.
I came across the situation whilst walking the dog along the other side of the river. There was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing going on to ascertain the height of the bridge. I climbed up the bank and onto the bridge to get a better view for more photos. I called out…”Do you guys have an issue?”…. “No Liz, we have got it under control.” They then proceeded to untie the structure in order to carry it under the bridge to its designated site. Grant the sculptor was there to supervise this delicate operation. Hopefully it will be safely installed later today and I will be able to blip it tomorrow…….
