Seahawks Logo

Oskar didn’t have school today so spent some time with us.—One of the things we did was go by the Burke museum to see the new exhibit I blipped on Friday night and see that Mask that inspired the Seattle football team logo, back in 1976. Oskar is really into football and the Seattle Seahawks - his class has been to the Burke and he knows quite a bit about this Northwest Style art, (can't miss it in our house) so was happy to be the first of the grandkids to see it. This mask is from the late 19th C., Kwakwaka'wakw..-a tribe a bit north on the coast of BC. -its an eagle transformation mask —used in a dance, the beak and the wings lift up and the beak spreads out to reveal a man inside.
The mask belongs to a museum in Maine but the Burke hope to buy it (with some volunteer finds!). Step up to the plate Seahawks !

And now I'm off to make dinner (sort of) for the next door neighbors!

Here's the link (again ) to the Exhibit if you are interested in the short video about this mask.
