U-Bahn München: 47/100 Königsplatz

Munich underground: 47/100 Königsplatz

The next entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series: Königsplatz underground station. The station was opened in 1980 together with other stations of the first major U2 line extension, such as Josephsplatz and Hohenzollernplatz, but does not share too many design features with them.

It was designed to stand out of the crowd to emphasise its location in Munich's museum and gallery quarter. The walls are decorated with copies of paintings of one of the many galleries that are made accessible by the station, while the platform features display cases with replicas of sculptures.

Above ground you find the Lenbachhaus, the Propyläen (Propylaea), Glyptothek, Antikensammlung (State Collection of Antiques), and (within a 5 minute walk) the 3 Pinakotheken (Old, New, and Modern) as well as Museum Brandhorst, and the Museum of Egyptian Art. The Technical Univeristy of Munich (TUM), the University of Television and Film (HFF), and the University of Music and Performing Arts are right around the corner as well.

Well, not the most beautiful of underground architecture - but I promise you that the next few will be much, much better!

To a more unrelated matter: I'm used to lens flare with my Tokina 11-16mm, but in this photo it is getting ridiculous. Any suggestions on how to reduce flare (besides buying/using another lens) is appreciated!
