Sculpture Symposium

We passed through town this morning on our way to take Cody to stay with his mate at Tauranga and we stopped at the Sulpture Symposium that is being held at our Arts Village. Had been wanting to pop in over the last two weeks and finally made it.

Wow....just so impressed. The works were to reflect the theme of "The Returning Soldier" to commemorate World War Two and 14 artists were invited to take part including one from Russia.

The finished works are being displayed on sites around a sulphur lake where the convalescing soldiers relaxed while undergoing treatment at the old Sanatorium nearby, now home to the Rotorua Museum.

While we were there this morning they were using a big crane to lift them into position and so enjoyed chatting with the sculptors.

I took this photo of Rakei and his wonderful piece which he was still working on. He is a traditional maori carver normally working in wood and this is the first time he has worked with stone....and what an amazing piece he has created. I look forward to seeing them all in position and will definitely blip them in the future.
