Night sky from Princess Bay

Had a very relaxing day today. Neither Ms D or I had to work so whilst Morv was at school we sneaked off to have lunch at the Empire Cinema and watched an afternoon movie. Wellington has managed to hold on to - and/or restore - a whole host of neighbourhood cinemas that often show arthouse and alternative movies.

The Empire is Island Bay's cinema and a classic example of the genre. Originally built in 1925 it retains lots of art deco features. Its three cinemas are tiny by modern standards (about 50 seats) but with very comfortable sofa style seats and a relaxed family atmosphere.

We watched This Way of Life a quirky but very moving - and beautifuly filmed - documentary about the struggle of the Karena family to live a simple but dignified life close to nature.

In the evening we walked the dog near Princess Bay and I blipped the night sky just before it lost all light.
