Gushet 13 - Old Swan Corner

Had a half-day today for a dental appointment (first in many, many years, so it was a major trauma that required a whole half day for a 15-minute appointment...thankfully nothing too bad, only one filling), and my dentist is on the south edge of Shawlands. So afterwards I went to Pollok Park for a cycle.

Going to Pollok Park required passing this building at the junction of Haggs Road and Pollokshaws Road, so this is maybe the southernmost gushet in Glasgow. The name "Old Swan Corner" derived from the name of the pub that was here for many, many years, the Old Swan Inn. The building dates from 1901.

It's actually a historically significant building in the city. It was the first of the old sandstone tenements to be refurbished by the Council, as the near-psychopathic desire to tear the old buildings down fizzled out in the late 60s. The decision to rehabilitate them was made in 1971: three years later, the Pollokshaws tower blocks were completed. That's the tower blocks which are now being demolished, by the way: it's a safe bet these buildings will still be standing for more than three years after they're all gone...
