A visit to Le Marche aux vieux papiers where I found some old postcards of Besancon that showed where my mother lived as a small child. In the suitcase I found some interesting letters, one from a man fighting in the first world war addressed to his brother and sister telling how they had no water to drink, but plenty to eat. He also wrote that the asparagus they had sent him had been inedible by the time it arrived and that in future they should keep it for themselves. Tucked inside the envelope was a small photograph that he may have taken of some prisoners of war being marched through a town somewhere in France. I shared a small glass of red wine with two of the vendors, enjoyed some banter and then left to have a wander by the Seine, taking in Les Bouquinistes, The Louvre and Notre Dame.
