Pokeweed:
As children we called them "indian berries" and rubbed the poisonous bright ruby colored berries on our arms and faces and ran through the woods and sneaked through the underbrush looking for danger and adventure.
Colonists used the berries as a dye.
The very young shoots are edible, and my favorite Elvis Presley song is a rockabilly tune called "Poke Salad Annie".
