Catherine Lacey: BoyStory

The budding builder

Armed with the digger, Callum is all set to help the construction workers dig the foundations for our home addition. Meanwhile, Mama several construction projects down the line is thinking, What are we letting ourselves in for this time?

I see his once beloved Exersaucer in this photo, unwittingly left out in a rare rainstorm and now beyond redemption. A shame: it would have been a good giveaway.

The extra room will give me some private space and a studio even though I mostly wish to continue to do outdoor reportage style photography.

Up 530am after late night cleaning the floors and the bathrooms and starting to clear out Reuben's medical supplies from his bedroom and the garage as that's to be demo'ed and we'll all be nice and cosy for 3 months. Today left at 830am for UCLA school then when it ended at 12pm, had a 3hr wait around Westwood Village with the boys for our appointment at UCLA re Reuben's reflux being part of the reason his trach went back in. During the appointment I spent most of the time with only one ear on the Dr whilst breaking up fights between the boys for which both were equally to blame. Callum was screeching so Reuben's special formula became his milkies and Reuben went away hungry. If Reuben's reflux can be controlled with his new meds, he won't have to have a 2nd open stomach surgery called a Nissen fundoplication (stomach twist) which by virtue of his throw ups for 3 years, suggests the original fundo has slipped. Next week under anaesthesia again to see if his throat is open and we can look at another decannulation of the trach.

Home 630pm having picked up CPK pizza curbside. Tomorrow is a repeat with a new pediatrician at UCLA. I look an absolute mess. My little feet which I think are too small for my 5'7' height are struggling and very sore and cracked due to everyday flip flop/barefooting. I hope this is as exhausting as life gets. I'm utterly there.
