Lindsay in Chicago

Lindsay models for a class demo on High-speed flash sync on West Grand Ave this afternoon. The exercise was intended to show that good portraits can be made in bad lighting situations with poor backgrounds.

The Challenge:
Create a fashion street portrait in harsh mid-day light with only an on-camera flash.

The Solution:
1) Use a wide f/stop of f/4.5 to establish a narrow depth-of-field throwing the yucky urban background out of focus.
2) Use a very fast shutter speed of 1/6400 second to darken the existing ambient light.
3) Enable the High-Speed Sync feature on the flash.
4) Set the color balance to Tungsten to turn the ambient light blue.
5) Use a 1/2-20 warming gel on the flash to correct the blue color shift on Lindsay.
